At the time, Stern was a freshman at Barnard College, and Rostenberg was completing her undergraduate studies at New York University. 2018-06-02 Rostenberg and Stern, rare-book dealers, single Jewish women and lifelong friends, continue the story begun in Old Books, Rare Friends with this inspiring, moving chronicle of a friendship and moving personal account of the 20th century. The authors, now nearing their 90s, describe their battles and victories in the changing world. Rostenberg and Ms. Stern's partnership dated from the early 1930s, when both were college undergraduates in Manhattan. They met while teaching Sabbath school at Temple Emanu-El.

Stern and Rostenberg wrote biographies, scholarly studies and histories—both together and separately—but their greatest art was not writing.

Rostenberg was born in the Bronx on December 28, 1908. Her father Adolf was a dermatologist. Rostenberg and her decades-long friend and business partner Madeleine B. Stern became widely-known in the late 1990s while in their late eighties when their memoir on the rare book trade, Old Books, Rare Friends became a best seller.
